Featured artist for May - Olive Starsmore

Olive lives and works on the Moray coast and has been painting here for the last eight years. She studied Art to Sixth Form at school and really wanted to go to Glasgow School of Art, but her parents were not convinced that this would be a good career choice and thought a vocational qualification would be more useful. She has been painting all her life as a hobby and sold several watercolours throughout the seventies but it was not until leaving teaching and moving to the North East in 2002 that she has been able to spend more time painting.

Olive’s oil paintings are characterised by her use of light and shade. In each subject she paints, whether interiors or landscapes, she concentrates on the light effects of a single moment. She will often revisit a familiar scene many times and paint an entirely different picture each time. She is particularly interested in the colours created at dawn and dusk and many of her works are of these times of day.

She says, “l find the light up here to be most inspiring and am influenced greatly by the sea. We can be found most days walking somewhere along the coastal path and beach with the dog. No two days are the same and l can stand just gazing at the changing colours enjoying the complexity and vitality, makingta mental note of what I have seen so that l can incorporate it later into a painting.”

Her style is still developing and recently she has discovered the freedom of using a palette knife. Several of the works on show have been done almost entirely with palette knives Olive has included a range of Giclee canvas prints of some of her works
in this exhibition. “This is my second exhibition in this area and l hope you will enjoy looking as much as I did painting.”
